+ What is Reiki?

Reiki practice came from Japan to the United States in the late 1930’s. Facilitated through gentle, non-manipulative touch, it helps balance our system, engage our inner resources, and move us towards a place of wellness.

How is Reiki Performed? During a Reiki session (also referred to as a ‘treatment’), a practitioner places their hands lightly on a fully clothed client who reclines on a massage table or sits in a comfortable chair. Sessions can also be given in alternative settings, like a hospital bed. In addition to receiving treatments from a practitioner, Reiki can be easily learned. A client can become a practitioner; able to treat themselves, friends or family. A qualified Reiki Master Teacher* can provide simple instruction and initiation into the practice.

+ Why are your Reiki classes so long?

The Reiki School and Clinic was founded by educators. Kim, one of our school’s founders, has a master’s in education and is a former elementary and preschool teacher. George, our school’s co-founder, taught, directed and created curriculum for preschool for nearly 20 years before he passed away. Kim always said, “If I can teach a first-grader math I can teach anyone anything.” We took a fresh look at Reiki education and created a new way of training that’s more in line with how people learn. Take a look at the following educational principles that drive our practice and support our longer style of training:

Practice: In order to learn we need to do, and do again. In fact, the best questions and answers come from hands-on experience with the subject matter. You can’t even think of good questions about practice when you haven’t practiced. The two-day workshop model without follow-up doesn’t support this. We built extra practice/integration time right into our training, so you don’t have to seek it out on your own.

Patience/Process: Learning takes time, Rome wasn’t built in a day. It’s easy to integrate any new tool if the information is given slowly, with time to digest it, process it, ask questions and practice.

People: We learn from each-other. Our peers ask questions that are on our minds, they show us examples of what to do/what not to do, they listen to us, and provide mirrors for our growth. Our teachers give us ongoing support, direction, and guidance. With our teachers and peers we create an understanding community of learners — especially when we may be learning something that others in our lives may not accept or understand.

+ I took Reiki classes with another teacher/school. Can I study the next level of Reiki with you?

It depends. Styles and schools of Reiki vary greatly from teacher to teacher, and often, students coming from other schools of training feel lost in our advanced classes. Contact our school’s director, Stephanie, so she learn about your Reiki training and help advise you on the best course of action.

+ What are your client lateness, cancellation and no show policies?

Appointment Cancellation and No Show Policy: We have a 24 hr cancellation policy. Give us 24 hrs notice if you have to change, cancel or reschedule your appointment. If you cancel within 24 hrs or do not show up for your scheduled appointment you will be expected to pay 50% of the appointment fee, on or before your next visit.

Lateness Policy: Arrive at your appointment on time. If you are late, your session will be shorter. If you are more than 15 minutes late know that we may not be able to accommodate you. If we cannot accommodate you, it will be considered a missed appointment and you will be expected to pay 50% of the fee for your session.

Practitioner and Client Rights: Reiki, Massage and other bodywork sessions are given for the purpose of stress reduction and relaxation. Said sessions are not substitutes for medical or psychological diagnosis or treatment. Reiki, massage and bodywork practitioners do not diagnose conditions, prescribe, perform medical treatment, or interfere with the treatment of a licensed medical professional. It is recommended that a client see a licensed physician, or licensed health care professional for any physical or psychological ailment they may have. If a client is uncomfortable in any way during a massage, reiki or bodywork session, they have the right to question their practitioner and/or request that the session be terminated. Any illicit or sexually suggestive remarks or advances made by the client will result in immediate termination of the session.

If you’d like someone included on their lists, please let us know and we’ll forward the info. Again, please make sure to have permission of anyone other than yourself.

+ Do I need to read or prepare before I take a class?

No. You just need to have an open mind. We think it’s best not to read, and therefore let go of expectations or preconceived ideas before you begin.

+ After I take a course at your school, will I be certified to practice Reiki professionally?

Reiki was created as a practice to do with friends and family. After Reiki Level I you will have a certificate that allows you to practice, or integrate Reiki into an existing practice (like massage or nursing). It does not mean you will feel ready or prepared call yourself a Reiki professional. The beginning levels of training provide a foundation in the practice. If you wish to practice professionally, you will want to develop other professional skills needed to open a business and work with the general public and/or specialized populations. Many of these skills are focused on in Reiki 3. To become a teacher, you must complete Reiki 4. Also, be mindful that certification does not give you a business license or insurance. You may be required to have these things to practice professionally and legally in your city or state.

+ I’ve taken Reiki before, somewhere else, and I’m not comfortable practicing Reiki. What can I do?

There are many options, and they differ depending on each person. We recommend coming in for a consultation, so we can hear your personal Reiki story. It may be best for you to simply recommit to self practice. It may be wise to come to Reiki Shares to gain confidence and practice, or it may be better to re-take a Reiki class at our school. Again, it depends on the individual.

+ What are your class lateness, absence, makeup policies?

The first five classes for Reiki 1 and Reiki 2 are mandatory, as well as the first class of Reiki 3. If you miss one of these classes, you are required to do a make-up. Three or more absences in any given course will result in non-completion of the course and no certificate will be awarded. Students are responsible for making up any material or assignments missed. Students can make-up a class by participating in the equivalent class of another course, if it is available, at no additional cost. If an equivalent class is not available, students can arrange for a private make-up with your teacher. The cost of a private make-up is $80 per session. As a courtesy to the class, please call or email if you will be absent or late. Three lateness’s of ten minutes or more count as an official absence.
