Reiki in Japan: Before Reiki Traveled the world
Saturday, June 2nd, 2-4pm, $20
Presentation with Jikiden Reiki Master/Teacher Amanda Jayne
Amanda Jayne lived in Kyoto, Japan from 2001 - 2006. Four of those years, she studied Reiki with the Yamaguchi's who have been using Reiki for over 65 years. Many people know and use Reiki, but few have access to the kind of history and experience that the Yamaguchi family have. Chiyoko Yamaguchi learned Reiki at age 17 in 1938 from Chujiro Hayashi, one of the original 20 teachers of Shin Shin Kaizen Usui Reiki Ryoho (Usui Reiki treatment method for the improvement of body and mind). She used Reiki on a daily basis, treating everything from minor injuries to major health conditions as all her family did, until she passed on in 2003. Amanda Jayne was lucky enough to meet and study for 1 year with Chiyoko Yamaguchi, continuing her studies with Chiyoko's son and eventually teaching alongside him in Europe and Japan.
Amanda’s presentation will include:
• the origins of Reiki and how and why it was adopted by the Japanese Navy.
• photographs of Usui and Hayashi from 1920s and 1930s
• fascinating history and incredible treatment experiences of the Yamaguchi family.
• benefits of Reiki practitioners and teachers understanding a little about Japanese culture.
To explain some of this, Tadao Yamaguchi has written a book titled, 'Light on the Origins of Reiki' in which Amanda has written two short sections. He has given Amanda Jayne permission to pass this information on to others through presentations.
If you would like to learn more about the origins of this wonderfully gentle yet powerful Japanese healing system or you have any questions for Amanda then this presentation is for you.
Bio
Amanda Jayne comes from a background of working in the field of mental health. Disillusioned with the treatment methods she saw around her, she decided to study alternative methods of helping people to regain physical and mental health and change their attitude toward life.
In 2001 Amanda traveled to Japan and met the Yamaguchi family by chance. Having been looking for a teacher of energy healing that felt right to her for some time, she knew instantly that she wanted to study Reiki with Chiyoko and her son, Tadao.
Co-translating the book, ‘The Hayashi Reiki Manual’ by Tadao Yamaguchi and Frank Arjava Petter enabled Amanda to further her understanding of this simple, extremely effective healing method and led to her contributing two short sections in Tadao Yamaguchi’s latest book, ‘Light on the Origins of Reiki’ published by Lotus Press.
Amanda graduated with a Masters degree in Spiritual Psychology at the University of Santa Monica in 2009 and recently completed her book about a 1,200 km solo pilgrimage around 88 temples on Shikoku island, Japan.

3 Secrets of a Medical Reiki Master
Friday, June 22nd, 6:30-8pm, $45 until May 15th, $55 thereafter,
In this informal and informative conversation, I will share with you three important secrets I’ve learned during the two decades that I have been practicing Reiki in mainstream medicine.
Pamela’s Story
My life’s focus is staying healthy and happy and helping others to do the same. I have been a student of yoga and meditation for more than 45 years. When I learned to practice Reiki in 1986, I was already a professional healer, educating and guiding my clients to regain and protect their well-being. I delight in helping people realize they can feel better and be happier, and in giving them very concrete, practical, and doable steps to do so.
As a Reiki master, I have pioneered the use of Reiki in conventional medicine through:
• Publishing papers in peer-reviewed medical journals
• Developing Reiki programs in prominent New York City hospitals
• Presenting and teaching Reiki in medical schools across the country, including Harvard and Yale
• Collaborating on research, including an NIH-funded study
• Serving as the lead reviewer for the NIH/NCCAM Reiki Backgrounder
• Speaking at medical conferences, including the NIH/NCI/OCCAM research conference, October 2007
• Teaching Reiki practitioners the skills and perspective needed to collaborate in conventional health care
• Consulting with health care administrators regarding integrating Reiki into clinical care.
Additionally, I am the author of REIKI: A Comprehensive Guide (Tarcher/Penguin) and numerous popular articles, and a leading spokesperson for Reiki in the media, including The Dr. Oz Show and Allure magazine.

Alternative Healing for PMS & PMDD Workshop
May 12th, 2012, 10am-5pm, $88 + $20 for course materials (includes a book and ritual candle) with Sophia Hoffer-Perkins
This workshop will explore alternate perspectives on menstruation. We will look deeply into the origins of, experiences of, and treatments for PMS, PMDD, and other stress surrounding menstruation. We'll learn tools for relieving stress and symptoms surrounding your menstruation.
Have you ever had any of these symptoms around (usually before or during) your period?
- feelings of deep sadness or despair
- feeling like someone else is running you
- feelings of intense tension or anxiety
- increased intense sensitivity to rejection or criticism
- panic attacks
- rapid and severe mood swings, bouts of uncontrollable crying
- lasting irritability or anger, increased interpersonal conflicts
- apathy or disinterest in daily activities and relationships
- difficulty concentrating
- fatigue
- food cravings or binge eating
- insomnia or hypersomnia
- feeling overwhelmed or feelings of being out of control
- increase or decrease in sex drive
- increased need for emotional closeness
- breast tenderness or swelling, heart palpitations, headaches, joint or muscle pain, swollen face and nose, back pain between the shoulder blades
- an altered view of one's body - a sensation of 'bloating', feeling fat or actual weight gain
In this workshop we'll explore and learn to celebrate menstration as a sacred time for healing, self-reflection, wisdom and knowing. By looking at alternative healing/health model's understanding of menstruation we will begin to understand symptoms as communication, rather than the enemy. We'll also learn the value of community; recognizing that you are not alone is the starting point for creating a healthier relationship with your body.

This course is an introduction to personal spiritual practice. Participants will build and tend an altar, learn to create a safe container for their personal work, and develop a familiarity with their own spirit guides. This class will provide a variety of practices for participants to integrate in everyday lives.
- The specific content of the course will be tailored to the range of experience levels of the attendees
- We welcome participants of all religious backgrounds and affiliations; the content of the course is not creed-specific, and all of the tools offered can be tailored to each participant's existing (or non-existent) spiritual and religious practices.
- This class is also a prerequisite for The Working With Spirit Guides Weekend Retreat
Testimonial: "I took the Calling All Guides - Creating Sacred Spaces course with Sophia at a point in my life where I was blocked and self-defeating and didn't even know it. I had quit my previous job and was unable to find work in my field, depressed, and unable to find the passion and self-confidence I was used to possessing. After just a few classes of guided meditation and the work I was instructed to do at home, I realized my true calling was a completely different career and began assertively chasing my childhood dream. The support and coaching I received from Sophia and the entire group was absolutely incredible, and instrumental in me feeling strong enough to speak openly about my goals and the path to achieving them. I found new ways to honor, support, and communicate with myself, and renewed my faith in meditation and prayer. The bonds of love and trust forged in this class are of a caliber I have never experienced before. Soon after the course I found a job I love in my new career path, am passionate about my work, and feel strong and supported enough to accomplish anything. I will be forever grateful to Sophia for offering this class at such an unexpectedly crucial time in life."
