Reiki in Japan: Before Reiki Traveled the world

Amanda JayneSaturday, June 2nd, 2-4pm, $20

Presentation with Jikiden Reiki Master/Teacher Amanda Jayne

Amanda Jayne lived in Kyoto, Japan from 2001 - 2006.  Four of those years, she studied Reiki with the Yamaguchi's who have been using Reiki for over 65 years.
Many people know and use Reiki, but few have access to the kind of history and experience that the Yamaguchi family have.  Chiyoko Yamaguchi learned Reiki at age 17 in 1938 from Chujiro Hayashi, one of the original 20 teachers of Shin Shin Kaizen Usui Reiki Ryoho (Usui Reiki treatment method for the improvement of body and mind). She used Reiki on a daily basis, treating everything from minor injuries to major health conditions as all her family did, until she passed on in 2003. Amanda Jayne was lucky enough to meet and study for 1 year with Chiyoko Yamaguchi, continuing her studies with Chiyoko's son and eventually teaching alongside him in Europe and Japan.

Amanda’s presentation will include:
• the origins of Reiki and how and why it was adopted by the Japanese Navy.
• photographs of Usui and Hayashi from 1920s and 1930s
• fascinating history and incredible treatment experiences of the Yamaguchi family.
• benefits of Reiki practitioners and teachers understanding a little about Japanese culture.

To explain some of this, Tadao Yamaguchi has written a book titled, 'Light on the Origins of Reiki' in which Amanda has written two short sections.  He has given Amanda Jayne permission to pass this information on to others through presentations.

If you would like to learn more about the origins of this wonderfully gentle yet powerful Japanese healing system or you have any questions for Amanda then this presentation is for you.

Bio
Amanda Jayne comes from a background of working in the field of mental health. Disillusioned with the treatment methods she saw around her, she decided to study alternative methods of helping people to regain physical and mental health and change their attitude toward life.

In 2001 Amanda travelled to Japan and met the Yamaguchi family by chance. Having been looking for a teacher of energy healing that felt right to her for some time, she knew instantly that she wanted to study Reiki with Chiyoko and her son, Tadao.

Co-translating the book, ‘The Hayashi Reiki Manual’ by Tadao Yamaguchi and Frank Arjava Petter enabled Amanda to further her understanding of this simple, extremely effective healing method and led to her contributing two short sections in Tadao Yamaguchi’s latest book, ‘Light on the Origins of Reiki’ published by Lotus Press.

Amanda graduated with a Masters degree in Spiritual Psychology at the University of Santa Monica in 2009 and recently completed her book about a 1,200 km solo pilgrimage around 88 temples on Shikoku island, Japan.

This book is a journey to the origins of Reiki as it evolved from Mikao Usui's first inspirations, showing readers how it was traditionally taught and practiced in Japan in the mid-thirties of the last century.  Light on the Origins of Reiki looks at some cultural background and many valuable practical applications including the natural cleansing system of the body and the concept of Byosen - finding the highest levels of toxins in the body.

If you would like to purchase a copy of Light on the Origins of Reiki, please let us know in advance. Email us here. We are preordering the book from Garland of Letters, 527 South Street. The books will be available to pick up at the store a few days before the signing.

3 Secrets of a Medical Reiki Master

Pamela MilesFriday, June 22nd, 6:30-8pm, $45 until May 15th, $55 thereafter,

with Pamela Miles

In this informal and informative conversation, I will share with you three important secrets I’ve learned during the two decades that I have been practicing Reiki in mainstream medicine.

Pamela’s Story

My life’s focus is staying healthy and happy and helping others to do the same. I have been a student of yoga and meditation for more than 45 years. When I learned to practice Reiki in 1986, I was already a professional healer, educating and guiding my clients to regain and protect their well-being. I delight in helping people realize they can feel better and be happier, and in giving them very concrete, practical, and doable steps to do so.
As a Reiki master, I have pioneered the use of Reiki in conventional medicine through:
•    Publishing papers in peer-reviewed medical journals
•    Developing Reiki programs in prominent New York City hospitals
•    Presenting and teaching Reiki in medical schools across the country, including Harvard and Yale
•    Collaborating on research, including an NIH-funded study
•    Serving as the lead reviewer for the NIH/NCCAM Reiki Backgrounder
•    Speaking at medical conferences, including the NIH/NCI/OCCAM research conference, October 2007
•    Teaching Reiki practitioners the skills and perspective needed to collaborate in conventional health care
•    Consulting with health care administrators regarding integrating Reiki into clinical care.
Additionally, I am the author of REIKI: A Comprehensive Guide (Tarcher/Penguin) and numerous popular articles, and a leading spokesperson for Reiki in the media, including The Dr. Oz Show and Allure magazine.
